Organising, Representing and Interpreting Data
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.4.1.LI.6 - Compare various statistical representations and justify why a particular representation is more suitable than others for a given situation.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Compare at least four different statistical representations (bar chart, pie chart, histogram, line graph, stem-and-leaf plot, and frequency polygon) and state the key features of each.
- Justify, with reasons, why a particular representation is more suitable for a given data set, using the nature of the data (categorical or numerical, discrete or continuous, grouped or ungrouped) and the purpose of the presentation.
- Identify situations where one representation would mislead or hide information that another representation would reveal clearly.
- Present a reasoned recommendation for the most appropriate graph for a real-life data set, defending the choice using appropriate statistical vocabulary.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to research, discuss, and present comparisons of statistical representations to the whole class.

Group discussions, Talk for Learning and research. Learning Experience: Learners in mixed-ability groups conduct research on the various statistical representations discussed in the classroom and justify why a particular representation is more suitable for a particular data Activity 1: - Group leaders to lead discussions on the comparison of the various statistical representations. - Groups present their findings to the whole class. Teaching and Learning Resources: - SHS curriculum - Research journals - Internet or e-books - Real-life examples - Software (Excel, SPSS) Assessment (1.4.1.AS.6). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
