Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.1 - Recognise and gain understanding of grinding operations.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Explain the working principle of a surface grinding machine, including the role of the abrasive wheel and the reciprocating worktable.
Identify and name the main parts and controls of a surface grinding machine from diagrams, pictures or video.
Distinguish grinding from earlier material removal processes (turning, drilling and milling) by comparing the cutting tool, workpiece motion and surface finish produced.
Describe at least two industrial applications of surface grinding and justify why grinding is preferred for those jobs.
Demonstrate safe working practices when observing or operating grinding equipment, naming the key safety precautions.
