SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 11

Manufacturing Processes

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.2.LI.1 - Recognise and gain understanding of grinding operations.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Explain the working principle of a surface grinding machine, including the role of the abrasive wheel and the reciprocating worktable.
  • Identify and name the main parts and controls of a surface grinding machine from diagrams, pictures or video.
  • Distinguish grinding from earlier material removal processes (turning, drilling and milling) by comparing the cutting tool, workpiece motion and surface finish produced.
  • Describe at least two industrial applications of surface grinding and justify why grinding is preferred for those jobs.
  • Demonstrate safe working practices when observing or operating grinding equipment, naming the key safety precautions.

Manufacturing Processes (3.2)
Content standard
3.3.2.CS.2 - Demonstrate understanding of material removal processes using abrasive processes. 3.3.2.LO.1 .1.1 Explain the working principles of a center-lathe machine and use the lathe machine to perform a simple material removal process.
Indicator
3.3.2.LI.1 - Recognise and gain understanding of grinding operations.
Suggested placement
Semester 2, Week 11 (Week 31 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning:
- Show learners the parts and controls of a surface grinding machine performing grinding operations through pictures or videos. Learners share their observations with colleagues.
- Show learners videos of industrial applications of surface grinders used in performing grinding. Learners think-pair-share the use of a surface grinder to perform grinding operations and receive feedback.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- Surface grinder
- Videos of grinding machines performing grinding operations
- Centre-lathe machine
Assessment (3.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
