SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 7

Manufacturing Tools and Equipment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.1.LI.2 - Understand the operation and application of a CNC machine.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Describe the basic operational cycle of a CNC machine, including the role of the part program, controller, and machine tool.
  2. Explain the key stages in setting up and running a CNC machining operation.
  3. Identify at least four industrial applications of CNC machines and justify why CNC is preferred for each application.
  4. Compare and contrast CNC machining with conventional manual machining in terms of accuracy, repeatability, and operator involvement.
  5. Critically evaluate a real manufacturing scenario and recommend whether CNC or manual machining is more appropriate, giving reasoned justification.

Source document note

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - p.93: the page prints two different indicator blocks under 3.3.1.CS.2 and labels both 3.3.1.LI.1, assessing both by 3.3.1.AS.1. They are distinct - the first explains the CNC machine as a machine tool, this one covers its operation and application - with different exemplars and different marked depth-of-knowledge levels. Filed as 3.3.1.LI.2 with assessment 3.3.1.AS.2, both free under this standard, so neither block is lost; the printed code for both is 3.3.1.LI.1

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Take learners on an educational tour to a manufacturing industry to observe the operation and application of CNC machines and share observations with the class.
Research-Based Learning:
- Learners in mixed-ability groups read from the library and Internet on the operation and applications of CNC machines and present their results to the class for feedback.
- Learners to discuss the operation and industrial applications of CNC machines. Organise contributions by learners.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Textbooks * Library resources
- * Internet access * Audio-visuals
- * Projectors * Videos on CNC machines.
Assessment (3.3.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
