SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 6

Manufacturing Tools and Equipment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.3.1.LI.1 - Explain computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine as a machine tool.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine in their own words and state what the letters CNC stand for.
  2. Explain how a CNC machine differs from conventional machine tools such as a manual lathe or drilling machine.
  3. Describe at least three applications of CNC machines in modern manufacturing.
  4. Present findings from group research on CNC machines, comparing them with machine tools used in local industries in Ghana.
  5. Justify, with reasons, why a manufacturer might choose a CNC machine over a manually operated machine tool.

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • indicator text - p.93: the document prints this same content-standard and indicator-code pair 2 times with different indicator text; all printed blocks are retained and the pair collision needs a human import decision

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning:
- Show learners a video of a CNC machine in operation.
- Let learners in mixed-ability groups read on CNC machines and make presentations explaining how different they are from machine tools used in most local industries.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Textbooks * Library resources
- * Internet access * Audio-visuals
- * Projectors * Videos on CNC machines.
Assessment (3.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
