Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.1 - Explain the term failure of materials.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Define the term “failure of materials” in their own words, using at least two real-world examples.
State at least three common causes of material failure (creep, fatigue, and fracture) and give a simple description of each.
Explain the difference between material failure and normal wear or damage, using examples from everyday objects.
Identify and describe at least one example of material failure they have observed at home, school, or in their community, and explain what might have caused it.
Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to research and present findings on material failure, giving and receiving respectful feedback.
