SHS3 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 1, Week 8

Properties of Materials

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.2 - Measure the tensile strength of bamboo material.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define tensile strength and state its SI unit (pascals, Pa, or newtons per square metre, N/m²).
  2. Describe the procedure for performing a tensile test on a bamboo sample using a tensile test machine.
  3. Measure and calculate the tensile strength of a bamboo sample from load and cross-sectional area data.
  4. Compare the measured tensile strength of bamboo with published values for steel and explain why bamboo is used in specific structural applications in Ghana.
  5. Present experimental results to the class, interpret the outcome, and give constructive feedback to peers.

Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 8 (Week 8 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Experiential Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups perform a tensile test on a bamboo sample in the laboratory, compare the results with the tensile strength of steel, and present their results to the class for feedback.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- Textbooks
