SHS3 Ict · Semester 2, Week 10

Guided and Unguided Network Systems

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.1 - Describe Commonly used Devices (e.g., broadband, modems, wireless access points, routers, network cards, hubs and switches).

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  • Define each of the seven network devices (broadband, modem, wireless access point, router, network card, hub, and switch) in their own words.
  • Explain the primary function and purpose of each device in a network communication system.
  • Compare and contrast the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of at least three pairs of network devices (e.g., hub vs switch, modem vs router, wireless access point vs router).
  • Categorise the devices according to whether they are primarily used in wired networks, wireless networks, or both.
  • Justify the choice of appropriate network device(s) for a given real-life connectivity scenario, explaining the reasoning behind their selection.

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:

  • content standard text - p.82: the content-standard token is visibly printed `3.X2.1.CS1`, which prints an extra X and omits separators; `3.2.1.CS.1` is used as the import code only to preserve the document's year/strand/sub-strand association
