Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.2 - Apply hand tools to manufacture engineering components.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Select the appropriate hand tool for a given manufacturing operation (marking out, cutting, fitting, or shaping) and justify their choice.
- Demonstrate correct and safe use of at least five hand tools while manufacturing a simple engineering component.
- Manufacture a simple component (e.g., a square key, a washer, or a simple bracket) to specified dimensions using hand tools.
- Measure their finished component using appropriate measuring instruments and report the actual dimensions accurately.
- Present their completed component to the class, explaining the processes used and receiving constructive feedback.

Project-Based Learning: Learners in mixed ability groups use hand tools to manufacture simple components in the workshop and present their results in class for feedback. Focus should be on marking out worksheets, hand fitting activities, cutting and shaping of components and measuring of the components. Teaching and Learning Materials: - Manual-hand tools - Power-hand tools - Hand tools Assessment (2.3.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
