Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.1 - Differentiate between manual-hand tools (e.g. hacksaw, cold chisels, screw drivers, taps, dies, engineer’s hammer, etc.) and power-hand tools (e.g. grinding machines, drills, electric screw drivers, etc.) in manufacturing.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. classify at least eight hand tools as either manual-hand tools or power-hand tools, giving a reason for each classification based on power source.
  2. explain the difference between manual-hand tools and power-hand tools with reference to energy source, tool bits, portability and typical workshop use.
  3. identify the common manual-hand tools and power-hand tools found in the school workshop and in their communities, stating one use for each.
  4. justify why a given manufacturing task (e.g. cutting a thin metal rod, drilling a precise hole, threading a bolt) is better done with a manual-hand tool or a power-hand tool.
  5. demonstrate safe handling of at least two manual-hand tools and one power-hand tool during a guided workshop activity, following the teacher’s safety instructions.

Talk for Learning: Let learners list hand tools available in their communities and what they are used for.
Experiential Learning:
- Learners to the workshop and let them identify available hand tools such as hacksaw, engineer's files, hacksaws, chisels, screwdrivers, taps, dies, engineers' hammers, grinding tools, drilling tools, screws etc.
- Learners differentiate between the identified hand tools as manual-hand tools (e.g., hacksaw, cold chisels, screw drivers, taps, dies, engineer's hammer, etc.) and power-hand tools (e.g. grinding machines, drills, electric screw, etc.) with reference to their power source and tool bits.
- Learners in mixed-ability groups practise the use of the hand tools on a work piece.
