SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 6
Manufacturing Tools and Equipment
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.2 - Apply measuring tools for the measurement of work pieces.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Use a steel rule to measure the length, width and depth of work pieces to the nearest millimetre.
- Read the main scale and vernier scale of a vernier caliper to obtain measurements to 0.1 mm accuracy.
- Read the sleeve and thimble scales of a micrometer screw gauge to obtain measurements to 0.01 mm accuracy.
- Record measurements from all three instruments for the same work piece and evaluate which instrument gives the most precise reading.
- Present and justify their measurement results to the class, explaining any differences between readings from the three tools.

Experiential Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups use rule, vernier calipers and micrometer screw gauge to measure work pieces. Share results with the rest of class for comments Teaching and Learning Materials: - * Rule * Vernier callipers * Micrometer screw gauge - * Measuring tools * Audio-visuals - * Supplementary books and materials * Library Assessment (2.3.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
