SHS2 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 2, Week 5

Manufacturing Tools and Equipment

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.1 - Explain the difference between measuring tools such as rule, a vernier caliper and a micrometer screw gauge for measuring work pieces.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify a steel rule, a vernier caliper and a micrometer screw gauge by name and state the quantity each measures (Level 1 Recall).
  2. Explain the difference between the three measuring tools in terms of their accuracy, readability and typical workshop uses (Level 2 Conceptual Understanding).
  3. Read a simple measurement from each of the three instruments (e.g., rule to the nearest millimetre, vernier caliper to 0.1 mm, micrometer screw gauge to 0.01 mm) (Level 2 Skills).
  4. Justify the choice of a measuring tool for a given work piece based on the required accuracy (Level 3 Strategic Reasoning).
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to research, present and give feedback on the differences between the measuring tools.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for Learning: Bring rule, vernier calipers and micrometer screw gauge to the classroom, and let learners identify and explain the use of these measuring tools.
Collaborative Learning: Learners in mixed ability groups read from the library, the difference between the rule, vernier calipers and micrometer screw gauge based on how they are used to measure a quantity in the workshop. Let learners present their findings in class and receive feedback from their colleagues.
Teaching and Learning Materials:
- * Rule * Vernier callipers * Micrometer screw gauge
- * Measuring tools * Audio-visuals
- * Supplementary books and materials * Library
Assessment (2.3.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
