SHS1 Computing · Semester 1, Week 19

Data Communication and Network Systems

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.3 - Differentiate among the 3 Types of Network Systems

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the three main types of network systems: LAN, MAN, and WAN.
  2. Describe at least two distinguishing characteristics of each network type, such as geographical coverage, ownership, and speed.
  3. Classify given network scenarios (e.g., school network, national bank network) into LAN, MAN, or WAN with correct justification.
  4. Compare and contrast any two network types using a simple table or diagram.
  5. Work in mixed groups to present examples of LAN, MAN, and WAN found in Ghana and explain why each fits its category.

This lesson builds on Week 17 (how networks work) and Week 18 (identifying types of networks). The focus here is on differentiating, that is, explaining what makes each type distinct.

Using the Collaborative Learning Approach:
- engage in a group brainstorming session to identify and classify various types of network systems.
- provide examples for each type to support your classification and explain the characteristics that distinguish them.
