Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.1.LI.2 - Produce a mark out on a work piece.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Explain the purpose of marking out a work piece before cutting or machining.
  2. Identify and select the correct marking-out tools for a given task (scriber, rule, try square, engineer’s square, dividers, centre punch, odd-leg calipers).
  3. Produce an accurate mark out of a rectangular shape on a metal or wooden work piece, correctly transferring dimensions from a drawing.

Talk for Learning: Lead learners to discuss the importance of marking out a work piece such as determining the outline of a work piece and the position of holes and slots. Encourage learners to add to what others say.
Experiential Learning: Learners in mixed-ability groups mark out and cut rectangular shapes from metal sheets or wood using the necessary marking-out tools. Learners display works for others to critique and accept contributions
