SHS1 Manufacturing Engineering · Semester 1, Week 2
Classification of materials
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.1 - Distinguish between different kinds of materials according to their use.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Sort common materials into metallic and non-metallic groups based on their observable properties.
- Identify at least three materials used in each of the following categories: construction, transportation, electronics, clothing, and food packaging.
- Explain why a particular material is chosen for a specific product (e.g., why copper is used for electrical wires and not rubber).
- Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to classify a collection of materials and present findings respectfully to the class.
- Respond constructively to peer feedback during group presentations, showing tolerance for critique.

Collaborative Learning: In mixed-ability groups, leaners identify different materials used to produce components and group them under metallic and non-metallic materials. Let learners share findings with the class while encouraging them to tolerate critiques and contributions. Teaching and Learning Materials: - * Textbooks Assessment (1.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall.
