Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.1 - Describe the evolution of the Internet and identify the Internet service providers and their functions.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Trace the key milestones in the evolution of the Internet, from ARPANET to the modern World Wide Web, in chronological order.
  2. Explain the role of the Internet as a global network of interconnected computers and distinguish it from the World Wide Web.
  3. Define an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and classify ISPs into Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 based on their scope and functions.
  4. Compare the functions of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 ISPs and identify real-life examples of each tier operating in Ghana and internationally.
  5. Justify the importance of ISPs in enabling everyday online activities such as browsing, streaming, and mobile money transactions, using critical reasoning.
