SHS3 Physics · Semester 2, Week 7
Electromagnetic Induction & Applications
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.3.3.LI.2 - Using experimentation, verify the laws of electromagnetic induction.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Describe the key observations from Faraday’s experiments that led to the formulation of Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.
- State Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction and apply it to calculate induced emf given the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage.
- Describe the observations from Lenz’s experiments and state Lenz’s law in their own words.
- Use Lenz’s law to determine the direction of an induced current in a simple experimental setup.
- Perform or simulate simple laboratory experiments to verify both laws of electromagnetic induction, and communicate their findings clearly in groups.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Collaborative learning: In groups of mixed abilities, describe experiments to verify the laws of electromagnetic induction. Describe the observations of Faraday and the development of Faraday's law. Describe the observations of Lenz and the development of the Lenz law. Investigate and discuss the historical and contemporary contributions of individuals, including women and individuals with disabilities, to the development of the concept of electromagnetic induction and its applications. Assessment (3.3.3.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Audio-visuals - Projectors, - YouTube - Interactive virtual laboratory - Practical - Reference laboratory books. setup
