Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.3.LI.3 - Verify Newton’s third law of motion from momentum change.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State Newton’s third law of motion in terms of momentum change for two colliding bodies.
- Compare the momentum changes of two bodies involved in an elastic collision and explain how the results verify Newton’s third law.
- Calculate the momentum change of each body in a two-body collision and show that the changes are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction.
- Use the principle of conservation of momentum to predict the motion of bodies after collision and relate this prediction to Newton’s third law.
- Design a simple collision experiment (physically or virtually) to collect data that verifies Newton’s third law, and communicate the findings clearly to peers.
