SHS3 Physics · Semester 1, Week 10

Kinematics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.1.2.LI.4 - Determine the energy stored in a system performing SHM.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Derive expressions for the potential energy and kinetic energy of a body performing simple harmonic motion in terms of displacement, amplitude, mass, and angular frequency.
  2. Calculate the total mechanical energy of a simple pendulum at any point in its oscillation, given the mass, amplitude, and length or angular frequency.
  3. Determine the energy stored in a helical spring from the area under the load-extension graph, and use this to calculate the elastic potential energy for given extensions.
  4. Apply the principle of conservation of mechanical energy to solve problems involving energy transfer between kinetic and potential forms in SHM systems.
  5. Interpret energy-displacement graphs for a system performing SHM, identifying the points of maximum kinetic energy, maximum potential energy, and total energy.

Experiential Learning: Let learners discuss the energy of a body performing simple harmonic motion for simple pendulum. For the helical spring apply your knowledge from area under the load- extension graph.
Encourage self-awareness and personal growth by fostering an environment where learners feel comfortable sharing their reflections and experiences.
Assessment (3.1.2.AS.4). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
