SHS3 Physics · Semester 1, Week 4
Basic Physics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.1.1.LI.3 - Deduce the period of rotation of a satellite moving in a circular orbit.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the relationship between the period of a satellite and the radius of its orbit using Newton’s law of universal gravitation and circular motion concepts.
- Derive the expression T = 2π√(r³/GM) for the period of a satellite in a circular orbit.
- Apply the derived equation to calculate the period of natural and artificial satellites, including the Moon around Earth and a geostationary satellite.
- Classify satellites by type (natural, artificial, geostationary, polar) and describe their typical uses.
- Evaluate how changes in orbital radius affect the period of a satellite, demonstrating strategic reasoning at Level 3 depth of knowledge.

Enquiry learning: Learners using previous knowledge in circular motion, deduce the period of a satellite moving around another object for example the moon around the earth. Learners describe the types of satellites. Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Assessment (3.1.1.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
