SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 16

Digital Electronics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.1 - Describe simple integrated circuits.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define an integrated circuit (IC) and explain how it combines multiple electronic components (transistors, resistors, capacitors) into a single package.
  2. Identify common types of ICs (e.g., 555 timer, operational amplifier, logic gates) from their physical appearance and markings.
  3. Distinguish between DIP (Dual Inline Package) and SMD (Surface Mount Device) IC packages by observing real or simulated examples.
  4. Explain the function of IC pins, including power (VCC, GND), input, and output pins, using a simple IC like the 555 timer.
  5. Interpret the meaning of IC part numbers and markings to identify the manufacturer, series, and function of a given chip.
