SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 14
Digital Electronics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.3.LI.3 - Describe and explain sum of product in Boolean notation.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Write Boolean notation expressions for NOT, AND, OR, NAND, and NOR gates using their correct symbols.
- State the two steps involved in deriving a Sum of Products (SOP) expression from a truth table (identify rows with output 1, then AND the inputs and OR the terms).
- Convert a truth table with up to three inputs into a Sum of Products Boolean expression.
- Explain why the Sum of Products form is called “sum of products” by identifying the AND terms (products) and the OR combination (sum).
- Design a simple decision-making circuit from a given truth table by writing the SOP expression and sketching the corresponding logic gate circuit.
