SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 11
Electromagnetism
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.3 - Describe force on a moving charged particle in a crossed field (Lorentz force).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a crossed field as a region where electric and magnetic fields are perpendicular to each other.
- Explain how the electric field and magnetic field each act on a moving charged particle, stating the direction of each force.
- Describe the resultant motion of a charged particle in a crossed field when the electric and magnetic forces balance and when they do not balance.
- Apply the concept of the Lorentz force to explain a practical device, such as a velocity selector or a cathode ray tube.
- Use the right-hand rule to predict the direction of the magnetic force on a moving positive charge in a crossed field setup.
