Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.1 - Calculate force on a charged particle in a magnetic field.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State the factors that affect the magnetic force on a charged particle moving in a magnetic field: the magnitude of the charge (q), the velocity of the particle (v), the magnetic field strength (B), and the angle (φ) between the velocity and the field direction.
- Apply the formula F = Bvq sin φ to calculate the magnetic force on a charged particle when given values for B, q, v, and φ.
- Solve for any single unknown quantity (B, q, v, or φ) in the equation F = Bvq sin φ when the other three values are provided.
- Describe qualitatively how the direction of the magnetic force depends on the direction of the particle’s motion and the sign of the charge, using the right-hand rule to determine the direction of the force on a positive charge.
- Recognise that no magnetic force acts on a charged particle moving parallel or anti-parallel to the magnetic field (φ = 0° or 180°, so sin φ = 0), and that maximum force occurs when the particle moves perpendicular to the field (φ = 90°, so sin φ = 1).
