Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.2.LI.3 - Discuss Fleming’s left-hand rule.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- State Fleming’s left-hand rule and identify the role of each finger (thumb, first finger, second finger) in determining the direction of motion, magnetic field, and current respectively.
- Apply Fleming’s left-hand rule to predict the direction of force (motion) on a current-carrying conductor placed in a uniform magnetic field when given the directions of current and magnetic field.
- Use a mnemonic to recall the ordering of the three quantities in Fleming’s left-hand rule (Force, Magnetic field, Current) with consistency.
- Demonstrate the rule physically using their left hand to solve at least three different orientation problems correctly in pairs or small groups.
- Justify, through discussion, why Fleming’s left-hand rule is used for motors while the right-hand rule is used for generators, connecting back to the motor effect studied in earlier lessons.
