Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.2 - Determine the effective capacitance of a number of capacitors arranged in i. series ii. Parallel.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. State the formulae for calculating effective (total) capacitance of capacitors connected in series and in parallel.
  2. Distinguish between series and parallel connections by describing how potential difference, total charge and capacitance behave in each arrangement.
  3. Calculate the effective capacitance of two or more capacitors connected in series using the reciprocal formula.
  4. Calculate the effective capacitance of two or more capacitors connected in parallel by direct addition.
  5. Solve mixed problems that require strategic reasoning to identify whether a given circuit arrangement is series or parallel before applying the correct calculation.
