SHS2 Physics · Semester 2, Week 1
Electrostatics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.3.1.LI.3 - Determine the Electric field strength/intensity at a point due to a point charge.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define electric field strength (intensity) at a point in words and state its SI unit (N/C or V/m).
- State the formula E = F/q and use it to calculate the electric field strength when given force and charge values.
- Apply the formula E = kQ/r² to calculate the electric field strength at a given distance from a point charge.
- Determine the direction of the electric field at a point: away from a positive charge and toward a negative charge.
- Solve combined problems involving Coulomb’s law (from the previous lesson) and electric field strength, showing all working steps clearly.

Talk for Learning: Describe the electrostatic force as when charges are stationary and as the force exerted by two charged particles on each other. Foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Assessment (2.3.1.AS.13). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall; Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
