Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.4 - Calculate Young’s modulus.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define stress, strain and Young’s modulus in their own words, using correct units for each quantity.
- Calculate stress as force per unit area (stress = F/A) for a given material under load.
- Calculate strain as the ratio of extension to original length (strain = e/L) for a given material under load.
- Apply the Young’s modulus formula (E = stress/strain) to calculate the Young’s modulus of a material from experimental data.
- Analyse and predict the behaviour of different materials under stress and strain by comparing their calculated Young’s modulus values.
