Basic Physics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.1 - Resolve vectors into their components.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define vector resolution and explain why a single vector can be replaced by two perpendicular components.
- Resolve a given vector into its horizontal and vertical components using trigonometric ratios (cos and sin).
- Use Pythagoras’s theorem to verify that the components obtained correctly reconstruct the original vector.
- Draw a vector diagram to scale and measure its components using a ruler and protractor, comparing measured values with calculated values.
- Apply vector resolution to solve simple problems involving forces, displacements and velocities.
This lesson builds on the learners’ knowledge of trigonometry and Pythagoras’s theorem from SHS1 Mathematics and the earlier weekly slots in this strand on density and flotation, where forces acting on bodies were discussed qualitatively. The next slot will use the components learned here to find the resultant of two vectors.

Collaborative learning: In mixed-ability groups of 3 to 5, let learners employ their knowledge of trigonometric ratios and Pythagoras's theorem to determine the components of the vectors represented. Grouping must take into account gender parity/balance and low ability must be paired with high ability. Assessment (2.1.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
