SHS2 Physics · Semester 1, Week 3

Basic Physics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 2.1.1.LI.2 - Establish the relationship between quantities.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Write proportionalities relating a dependent variable to independent variables in a physical situation.
  2. Apply the dimensions of quantities to set up simultaneous equations involving unknown powers.
  3. Solve the simultaneous equations to determine the degree of dependency between quantities.
  4. Establish a complete relationship between quantities, including any dimensionless constant, by combining the proportionalities.
  5. Verify a derived relationship using dimensional analysis and state its limitations.

Talk for Learning: Set up proportionalities between dependent variable and independent variables and use the dimensions of the quantities and simultaneous equations to establish the degree of dependency and subsequently establish the relationship between quantities.
Opportunity for all to participate. Grouping must cater for individuals with low level of mathematical ability.
Assessment (2.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
