SHS1 Physics · Semester 2, Week 9
Magnetostatics
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.3.2.LI.1 (Distinguish between magnets, magnetic and non-magnetic materials)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Recall the definition of a magnet and state at least two basic properties of a magnet.
- Classify at least eight common materials as either magnetic or non-magnetic after testing them with a bar magnet.
- Distinguish between a magnet, a magnetic material, and a non-magnetic material, giving at least one example of each.
- Predict whether a given material will be attracted to a magnet based on the materials it is made from, and verify the prediction through testing.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-gender groups to test materials and share findings with the class in a clear, organised manner.

Experiential Learning: - Recall the definition of magnets - In groups of mixed abilities, categorise materials into magnetic and non-magnetic materials using magnets. Provide equitable access to resources and opportunities. Assessment (1.3.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Magnetic - Audio-visuals and non-magnetic materials - Interactive - Magnets simulations - Iron filings - Flash cards
