Kinematics

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.3.LI.3 - Represent the motion of objects graphically i.e., distance-time, displace-time, and velocity-time and deductions that can be made from it.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Plot distance-time, displacement-time, and velocity-time graphs from given data tables, with correct labelling of axes and units.
  2. Calculate the slope of a distance-time graph and explain that it represents speed for uniform motion.
  3. Calculate the slope of a displacement-time graph and explain that it represents velocity.
  4. Determine the slope of a velocity-time graph and identify it as acceleration, and calculate the area under the graph as displacement.
  5. Interpret the shape of a graph to describe the motion of an object (at rest, uniform motion, accelerating, decelerating) and distinguish between distance-time, displacement-time, and velocity-time graphs.

1.1.3.LI.3 - Represent the motion of objects graphically i.e., distance-time, displace-time, and velocity-time and deductions that can be made from it.
Suggested placement
Semester 1, Week 9 (Week 9 of the year)

Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

Talk for learning:
- Let learners discuss how the motion of object can be represented graphically.
- Learners must determine the slope of the graph as well as the area under the graph
- Learners give the significance of the slope and the area under the graph.
Ensure that the teaching materials, examples, and illustrations reflect diverse perspectives.
Assessment (1.1.3.AS.3). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding; Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
