SHS1 Physics · Semester 1, Week 6

Matter

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.1.2.LI.1 - Identify the various states of matter.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Name the three common states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and give at least two everyday examples of each from their environment.
  2. Identify the state of matter of a given material by describing its observable properties, such as shape, volume, and compressibility.
  3. Describe in simple terms the arrangement and movement of particles in each state of matter, using words like “fixed”, “close together”, “far apart”, “vibrate”, and “move freely”.
  4. Classify at least five different materials shown as pictures, videos, or real objects into solid, liquid, or gas, justifying each choice with one physical property.
  5. Work collaboratively in mixed-ability groups to watch a simulation or video and, through discussion, present the various states of matter they identified, respecting the contributions of all group members.

Collaborative learning: Let learners watch a simulation/video for them to come out with the various states of matter through discussion.
Ensure that the teaching materials, examples, and illustrations reflect diverse perspectives.
Assessment (1.1.2.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 1 Recall.
