Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.5.LI.1 - Identify the basic skills in race walking and apply them.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define race walking and state at least three official rules that distinguish it from ordinary walking or running.
- Identify and describe the four fundamental techniques of race walking: posture, foot placement, arm swing, and hip movement.
- Demonstrate correct race walking technique over a continuous distance of at least 200 metres, maintaining the two official rules (continuous ground contact and straight leading leg).
- Analyse a video clip of race walking and identify at least two technical faults and two correct techniques using appropriate vocabulary.
- Apply race walking skills in a short competitive walking race, respecting the rules and demonstrating good sportsmanship.

Talk for learning: Learners in small groups discuss the definition, history and the rules of race walking Skill based learning: With the aid of videos, learners identify and practice the fundamental techniques of race walking including posture, foot placement, arm swing and hip movements. Learners race walk continuously for a set period, gradually increasing the duration as they master the technique. Assessment (2.1.5.AS.1): Level 2: Discuss the basic rules used in race walking. Level 3: Demonstrate the basic techniques used in race walking Level 4: Compete in a walking race and apply the skills and techniques learnt.
