Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.1.2.LI.12 - Identify the basic skills in hockey and apply them in a game (e.g., hockey - hitting in hockey).
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and name at least four basic skills in hockey, including hitting, pushing, stopping and dribbling.
- Describe the correct technique for hitting a hockey ball, including grip, stance, swing and follow-through.
- Demonstrate the skill of hitting a hockey ball accurately towards a target from distances of 10 m, 15 m and 20 m.
- Apply the hitting skill in a modified hockey game situation, passing the ball to a partner using correct form and control.
- Distinguish between a push and a hit in hockey, explaining when each skill is most appropriate during play.

Collaborative/Group-based learning: Explain and demonstrate hitting techniques in hockey to learners. Target practice - Place cones 10m, 15m and 20m away from a demarcated area on the field with targets. Each learner is assisted to hit the ball from each of the distances in an attempt to hit the target. Partner drills - pair up learners and have them pass the ball back and forth using hitting techniques emphasising correct form and control.
