SHS1 Social Studies · Semester 1, Week 6

Civic Ideals and Practices

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 1.3.4.LI.1 - Explain the meaning and purpose of road safety in the Ghanaian society

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define road safety in their own words, using familiar Ghanaian road situations as reference points.
  2. Explain at least three purposes of road safety, linking each purpose to the protection of lives, property, or national development.
  3. Distinguish between safe and unsafe road user behaviours observed in their communities and classify them accordingly.
  4. Analyse a short video clip or case study of a road accident and identify how the absence of road safety practices contributed to the incident.
  5. Present research findings on the meaning and purpose of road safety to the class, using clear oral communication and showing respect for diverse viewpoints.

This lesson focuses on building the conceptual foundation (what road safety is and why it matters). It deliberately stops short of the detailed causes and socio-economic implications of accidents, which are scheduled for Week 7, and the study of road signs and markings, which comes in Week 8.
