SHS3 General Science · Semester 2, Week 16
The Human Body and Health
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.4.1.LI.2 - Explore selected traits in humans using applications of Mendelian crossing.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define a Mendelian cross and identify the components of a Punnett square (parental genotypes, gametes, offspring genotypes, and phenotypes).
- Use letters of the alphabet to represent alleles for selected human traits (height, skin colour, baldness) and set up monohybrid crosses correctly.
- Determine the genotypic and phenotypic ratios from a given Mendelian cross for a selected human trait.
- Predict the probability of offspring inheriting a particular trait from parents with known genotypes.
- Design a mind map linking the concepts studied in Weeks 11 to 15 (heredity, hereditary diseases, sex determination) to the selected traits explored in this lesson.

Talk for Learning: In mixed-ability groups, learners select genes represented by letters of the alphabet and use them to draw Mendelian crossings for the following traits: height, skin colour, baldness, etc. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Wall charts - Books - Pictures and videos on Mendelian crossing. Assessment (3.4.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
