SHS3 General Science · Semester 2, Week 15
The Human Body and Health
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B3.4.1.LI.1
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Draw a Punnett square crossing to show how sex is determined in humans, using X and Y chromosomes.
- Explain, with a labelled diagram, why there is roughly a 1:1 ratio of male to female offspring in human populations.
- Analyse a given pedigree or family scenario to predict the probability of a child being male or female.
- Critique their own and peers’ chromosome diagrams against standard charts, identifying at least one error or improvement.
- Apply the concept of Mendelian crossing to explain why fathers determine the sex of a baby, not mothers.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Diamond 9 approach: - Using the Diamond 9 Approach, allow learners to discuss their understanding of Mendelian crossing to show sex determination. - Get learners to compare individual drawings with drawings on pictures, videos or charts and critique themselves. - Using videos and pictures, put learners into groups to discuss and draw some Mendelian crossings and explain how this show exemplifies sex determination. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Wall charts - Books - Pictures and videos on Mendelian crossing. Assessment (3.4.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
