SHS3 General Science · Semester 1, Week 10
Essentials for Survival
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.3 - Describe autonomic nervous system.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and distinguish it from the somatic (voluntary) nervous system.
- Identify the two main divisions of the ANS, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, and state the general role of each.
- Describe the effect of sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation on at least four organs (heart, lungs, pupils, digestive system).
- Explain how the ANS maintains internal balance (homeostasis) using a daily life example such as rest versus a sudden fright.
- Work collaboratively in groups to match ANS functions to their correct division and justify their choices.

(Week 10 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.

The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:
- exemplars - p.97: the assessment code is printed 3.x.2.1.AS.3, which does not follow the year.strand.sub-strand.TYPE.n code form; the assessment content is carried exactly as printed

Group work/collaborative Learning: In their differentiated learning groups, learners match the structure of neurons to their functions. Support groups to exchange and discuss their matchings and describe the structure and functions of the neuron. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Models, Videos, books and Pictures of the central nervous system. - Models, pictures, books, videos and the internet show the peripheral nervous system. - Computer/internet, diagrams/video/pictures and drawing paper Assessment (3.x.2.1.AS.3): Level 1 Recall Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding Level 3 Strategic Reasoning Level 4 Extended critical thinking and reasoning.
