Essentials for Survival

Lesson notes

Learning Objectives

Indicator: 3.2.1.LI.1 - Analyse the central nervous system.

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify the two main parts of the central nervous system, the brain and the spinal cord, and describe their location in the body.
  2. Label a diagram showing the major regions of the brain, including the cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem and medulla oblongata.
  3. Match each major region of the brain to its primary function, such as conscious thought, coordination of movement, and control of breathing.
  4. Explain the role of the spinal cord in carrying messages between the brain and the rest of the body, including its involvement in reflex actions.
  5. Analyse a simple scenario and predict which part of the central nervous system is affected when a person shows particular symptoms, giving reasons for the prediction.
