SHS2 General Science · Semester 1, Week 15
Essentials for Survival
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.2 - Describe the structure of the lungs and investigate the products of aerobic respiration.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and describe the main parts of the human lungs, including the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, and diaphragm, using models, charts, or videos.
- Explain how the structure of the alveoli is adapted for efficient gas exchange during breathing.
- Investigate the products of aerobic respiration through a simple demonstration or experiment and state that carbon dioxide, water, and energy are produced.
- Write the word equation for aerobic respiration and explain what happens to the energy released.
- Distinguish clearly between breathing (ventilation) and respiration as chemical processes, correcting common misconceptions.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Group work/collaborative Learning: - With the aid of Models, videos, and charts, learners describe the structure of the human lungs in whole class discussion. - In differentiated learning groups, use think-pair-share to investigate the products of aerobic respiration, supported by models, books, pictures, videos and internet sources. - Learners reflect on the concepts of breathing and respiration and discuss the misconceptions between the two concepts. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Models or videos, pictures/charts/books and internet resources showing aerobic respiration. - Models/pictures/charts or videos and internet resources - Books - Journals Assessment (2.2.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
