SHS2 General Science · Semester 1, Week 7
Essentials for Survival
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 2.2.1.LI.1 - Analyse the structure and function of the excretory organs in the human body.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify and name the four main excretory organs of the human body (kidneys, skin, lungs, liver) and state the primary waste product each removes.
- Describe the structural features of the kidney, including the renal cortex, medulla, pelvis, ureter, and bladder, and explain how each part supports the kidney’s function.
- Relate the structure of the skin (sweat glands, pores) and lungs (alveoli, moist surfaces) to their excretory roles.
- Use a model, chart, or video to analyse and explain, in small groups, how at least two excretory organs work together to maintain a healthy body.
- Construct a simple labelled diagram of the urinary system showing the pathway of urine from kidney to the outside of the body, and explain the function of each labelled part.

Group work/collaborative Learning: Using models or videos, put learners in mixed-ability groups and supervise groups to analyse the structure and function of excretory organs in the human body system. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Models or videos (see the link below) (https://www.kenhub.com/en/library/anatomy/human-body- systems) - chart/picture, books - Books - Internet resources - Journals - Magazines Assessment (2.2.1.AS.1). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 3 Strategic reasoning.
