SHS1 General Science · Semester 1, Week 7
Science and Materials in Nature
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: 1.1.1.LI.2 - Apply the properties of solids to everyday use.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least three physical properties of solids (hardness, density, melting point, electrical conductivity, malleability, brittleness) and describe each in their own words.
- Match at least five common solids found in Ghanaian homes and workplaces to the specific property that makes them suitable for their everyday use.
- Justify, with at least two reasons, why a particular solid is chosen over another for a given real-world application.
- Evaluate at least two real-world scenarios and recommend the most appropriate solid material, explaining their choice using property-based reasoning.
- Work collaboratively in mixed-sex groups to research, discuss, and present findings on how the properties of solids determine their uses.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
Learners research how the properties of different solids relate to their uses in life. Provide opportunities for students to evaluate various real-world scenarios and make decisions based on the information at hand. Teaching and Learning Resources: - Internet resources such as Massive Open Online - Courses (MOOCs) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4MdZx1fgbA; - Equations and reaction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcF8E8aAOGs; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTq4sgGd2QU) - Books and Journals. - Projectors - Charts - Pictures of Binary compounds, - equations - Videos on the relationship between binary compounds, chemical equations, and names of compounds - Models Assessment (1.1.1.AS.2). The document marks these depth-of-knowledge levels for this indicator: Level 2 Skills of conceptual understanding.
