Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)

- Use coordinating conjunctions to join clauses in compound sentences: and, but, nor, or, so, then, yet.
- Use subordinating conjunctions to join clauses in complex sentences:
  - time clauses: when, before, after, since, while, as, until
  - conditional clauses: if, unless
  - purpose clauses: in order to, so that
  - reason clauses: because, since, as
  - result clauses: so that
  - concessive clauses: although, though, while
  - place clauses: where, wherever
  - clauses of manner: as, like, the way.
- Expand sentences in to paragraphs using defining and non-defining relative clauses. E.g. the men who stole the car were jailed. (defining) The women, who stole the car, were jailed. (non-defining) Differences between the two may show in the comma marks.
- Use noun phrases, adjectival phrases and adverbial phrases to expand sentences.
