By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify words and phrases in a complex text that appeal to the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch).
Explain the meaning of common figurative expressions (simile, metaphor, personification) used in a given passage.
Identify symbols in a text and state what they represent within the context of the passage.
Interpret how a writer’s choice of sensory, figurative, or symbolic language shapes the reader’s understanding of characters and events.
Respond to inferential questions about the author’s use of language in a short passage.
