Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.2.3.2.4 - Distinguish different ways musical works of Ghanaian art composers reflect the history, culture, environment and topical issues

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Compare the musical works of Ephraim Amu and J. H. K. Nketia, identifying at least two differences in how each composer reflected Ghanaian history and culture.
  2. Explain how at least three features of Ghanaian culture or environment (such as language, rhythm, or instruments) appear in the works of Ghanaian art composers.
  3. Identify at least two topical issues addressed in the works of Ghanaian art composers and describe how the music communicates these issues.
  4. Transcribe or adapt lyrics of a short song that sensitises the public on an emerging topical issue, such as the SSNIT Pension Scheme.
  5. Present and justify their transcription choices to peers, explaining how the musical elements reflect the topical issue being addressed.
