Learning Objectives

Indicator: B8.1.1.1.3

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Define at least five principles of design (including contrast, emphasis, unity and variety) in their own words and record them accurately in their sketchbooks.
  2. Identify and describe at least three examples of design principles in nature and three in the manmade environment, giving reasons for their choices.
  3. Explain in writing how contrast, emphasis, unity and variety organise the elements of design (texture and colour) into a unified visual composition.
  4. Create a simple observational drawing or collage that deliberately uses at least two principles of design, and present it to the class for feedback.
