Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B8.1.2.1.3 - Explain the issues associated with online services (e.g. social media, wikis, blogs, etc.)
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Identify at least five online services they use or have access to and state the purpose of each.
- Explain at least three benefits of using online services such as social media, wikis and blogs.
- Describe at least four issues or risks associated with online services, including fake news, cyberbullying, privacy concerns and online scams.
- Evaluate a given scenario involving an online service and suggest appropriate actions to stay safe.
- Demonstrate responsible use of online services by creating simple rules for safe online behaviour.
This lesson builds on the previous week’s focus on portable computing devices. Learners already know how devices such as smartphones and tablets connect to the internet, so this week they examine what happens when people use those devices to access online services.

Term 1, Week 8
(Week 8 of the year)
Our suggestion, laid out in curriculum order across three terms of twelve weeks. NaCCA does not fix the week, so follow your school's scheme of learning.
- Source document note
-
The official curriculum document has a fault in this entry, so the curriculum text above is transcribed exactly as printed:
- sub strand name - printed 'INTHE' with no space. The JHS document never prints the spaced form, but NaCCA's own primary Computing curriculum names the same sub-strand 'TECHNOLOGY IN THE COMMUNITY' (b4/b5/b6-computing.csv). sub_strand_name becomes the lesson topic a teacher sees, so the missing space is closed.
