JHS1 Science · Term 3, Week 2
Force and Motion
Lesson notes
Learning Objectives
Indicator: B7.4.4.1.1 - Understand that unbalanced forces acting on an object cause it to move.
By the end of the lesson, learners can:
- Define force and motion using their own words and give two examples of each from daily life.
- Distinguish between balanced and unbalanced forces by explaining the effect each has on the motion of an object.
- Predict what will happen to a stationary object when the forces acting on it become unbalanced.
- Demonstrate, using a simple classroom activity, that an unbalanced force is needed to start an object moving, stop it, or change its direction.
- Explain in clear, ordered steps (speaking and writing) how unbalanced forces cause a trolley or book to move, using the terms “force”, “balanced” and “unbalanced” correctly.

Exemplars (from the NaCCA curriculum)
1. Explain inertia as a tendency of a body to resist motion. 2. Demonstrate how unbalanced forces cause motion.
