Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.5.1.1.1 - Demonstrate understanding of oral literature (narratives, poetry, drama) and how the different genres contribute to meaning

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

Identify and distinguish between the three types of oral narratives: folktales, myths and legends, giving at least one feature of each.
Read aloud African oral poems (dirges, lullabies, war and praise songs) with attention to their rhythmic variations.
Discuss the cultural and social significance of at least two types of oral poetry.
Distinguish types of traditional drama (outdooring, puberty rites, marriages, festivals, enstoolment or enskinment) according to their social functions.
Perform or present a short traditional drama or poem, showing how its genre contributes to the meaning of the piece.
