Learning Objectives

Indicator: B7.3.1.4.1 - Use dependent and independent clauses appropriately in speaking and writing

By the end of the lesson, learners can:

  1. Identify independent and dependent clauses in given sentences and short passages.
  2. Distinguish between an independent clause and a dependent clause by testing whether a group of words can stand alone as a complete sentence.
  3. Combine dependent and independent clauses using subordinating conjunctions such as because, when, although, if, and since to form complex sentences.
  4. Write at least five original complex sentences that correctly combine a dependent and an independent clause.
  5. Use complex sentences appropriately in a short spoken response or written composition about a familiar topic.
